Crafting a Bespoke Steel Gate for an Old English Country Home

Beautifully idyllic, this Old English Country Home had all the charm in the world—but it needed a bespoke solution to solve a very British problem. With the staggering amount of rain we’ve seen this year, the owners desperately needed a way to deter the relentless weather from beating against their front door.

That’s where Industrial Modern Furniture stepped in.

When John and Karen were approached to design a custom gate for the property, the key words from the customer were "ornate tradition." They loved the classic elegance of scrolls, swirls, and fleur-de-lis motifs. While steel was undoubtedly the best and most sturdy option for the job, the design brief called for a "certain softness." For us, this meant moving away from rigid, straight lines and leaning heavily into the fluidity of sweeping curves and intricate metalwork.

The Design Process: Measuring Up

It’s a well-known fact among craftsmen that old country cottage walls are rarely ever perfectly straight! To ensure a flawless fit, the project began with a comprehensive on-site design consultation and measuring session.

During this visit, the true versatility of the project came to light. The customer didn't just want a winter weather shield; they wanted a piece that would work year-round. Their vision was that in the warmer summer months, the gate could be fixed back out of the way, doubling as an elegant protector for their log store. We knew right then that this was going to be a truly versatile piece of bespoke, crafted steel.

Precision Engineering & Fabrication

Back in the workshop, on a characteristically wet and rainy day, the hard work began. Designing the gate to be a retrofit meant that strengthening swirls had to be carefully incorporated into the structure. John worked meticulously to achieve the required precision.

After hours of creativity and precision welding, the gate was treated with a high-quality zinc primer and finished with a durable hybrid powder coat, ensuring it would stand the test of time (and the weather!).

Installation Day: Sunshine and Spring Blooms

After weeks of rain, installation day finally arrived—bringing glorious blue skies with it!

John is no stranger to setting up a temporary workshop with a portable table and workbench on-site, and this installation was no different. Working outside on a crisp spring day in March, surrounded by the scent of blooming hyacinths and the warmth of the sunshine, made fitting this gate an absolute pleasure. It slotted into place perfectly.

The Pièce de Résistance

The true stroke of genius in this design, however, is the removable Perspex inner sheeting.

During the harsh, wet winter months, the Perspex acts as an invisible shield, stopping the wind and rain from battering the cottage's front door. Come spring and summer, the sheeting can be easily removed and stored away, allowing the breeze to flow through the ornate steel swirls while the gate protects the log store.

It’s an ingenious, multi-functional design that perfectly marries heavy-duty steel protection with the soft, ornate aesthetic the customer dreamed of.

Crafting Community: Custom Railings for Portishead Youth Centre

Here at Industrial Modern Furniture, we are often asked to do on-site visits to assess a client's needs. Every project is special, but recently, we had a wonderful opportunity to work right here within our own local community—a project that was truly close to our hearts.

A Hub of Local Activity

The Portishead Youth Centre gives so much to our community. From toddler playgroups and helping young people thrive to hosting elderly luncheons, it is an absolute hub of activity.

Unfortunately, an incident in 2025 caused significant damage to the Youth Centre’s railings and affected their gated access. When it was time to measure up and consider the best way forward, we were honoured to step in and give something back to the health and safety of this amazing space.

A special thank you to the Portishead Town Council, who were pivotal in moving this made-to-measure project forward!

Precision Craftsmanship

Whether you have a need for heavy-duty commercial railings or a simple, elegant handrail for your garden, our fabrication process is built on precision.

For this project, John created and set up a custom jig template to weld the new gate and railings with absolute precision spacing. If you look carefully at the photos, you can see that even the smallest details were carefully considered. For example, the drop bolt that secures the gate was handcrafted from a solid steel rod, using a specialised bending technique for ease of handling.

Installation is a multi-step process to ensure maximum durability. First, John planted the posts securely in place. After allowing them to fully cure and set, we returned to attach the custom fittings, rails, and gates.

Built to Last in "Portishead Blue"

As with all of our outdoor work, longevity is key. Once crafted, the steel was primed with an anti-corrosion zinc coating. It was then finished with a hybrid powder coating—in this case, a vibrant and fitting "Portishead Blue."

A True Team Effort

We have to give a massive shoutout to the Youth Centre team. They are super efficient, professional, and incredibly considerate of their customers, young and old. Thanks to their excellent communication, we were able to seamlessly risk-assess and liaise to create the best, safest working environment for everyone—even on the wettest of days!

Why Ergonomics Matter in Your Garden

Thoughts of spring really brighten your mood in this wet weather!

And sitting on a beautifully bespoke handcrafted bench in the sunshine sounds like a perfect idea. John has studied comfort and ergonomics at length, some folk think to sit bolt upright is best for your back and others want to lounge in a 'near laying down' position however when John crafts with geometric precision he will weld the back rest of your garden bench 10 degrees off the right angle so that it is in the optimum position to best support the spines natural curve and reduce muscle fatigue! How about that for consideration of comfort!

Pistachio Green has been incredibly popular in gardens for 2025/26 as it reflects the green of nature, and the waney wood seat is just stunning.

Local Bristol customers who spotted our garden bench at Portishead Summer Show last year put in a request for a retrofit to ensure the bench was adjusted accordingly and comfortable to sit on! Pictured here, you can see Nick visiting our Yatton workshop for a trial seating session, and the 10 degrees off right angle worked perfectly. Happy with the retrofit, John had the go-ahead to anti-corrosion zinc prime the steel of the bench before the powder coating could begin.

Stainless steel coach bolt features really help to not only secure the wood in place but make the colour of the wood 'pop'! From Rotten Wood to Sky Blue Planters

There is something truly special about living in an idyllic village. The peace, the birdsong, and the connection to nature make the garden a vital part of the home.

During the lockdown years, many of us turned to our outdoor spaces for solace. Our latest clients were no exception; they had originally opted for wooden planters to create their own personal garden sanctuary. However, as the British weather often dictates, time wasn't kind to the timber. A few years on, the wood was rotting, losing its structural integrity, and in desperate need of a permanent solution.

That’s where Industrial Modern Furniture stepped in.

The Commission: Precision and Personalisation

Our clients knew they wanted something that would stand the test of time without losing that bespoke charm. John headed out to their beautiful village location to measure up for a complete garden overhaul.

Because every garden nook is different, "off-the-shelf" simply wouldn’t do. John designed and crafted seven individually sized planters , each tailored to fit a specific spot in the clients' sanctuary.

Why Steel?

Lately, we’ve seen a huge surge in the "Alan Titchmarsh effect." With the gardening legend frequently showcasing the beauty of planters that oxidise over time, many of our customers opt for self-coloured steel to achieve that rustic, weathered orange patina.

However, for this project, the vision was different.

A Splash of Sky Blue

While the industrial look is our bread and butter, we love it when a client brings a pop of colour to the table! For this sanctuary, Sky Blue was the order of the day.

To ensure these planters never suffer the same fate as their wooden predecessors, we didn't just stop at the aesthetics. Each planter was:

Zinc Primed: Providing a heavy-duty layer of rust protection.
Powder Coated: Finished in a vibrant Sky Blue for a sleek, durable, and weather-resistant surface.

There is nothing quite like seeing a project come to life in its final setting. We believe in delivering quality, and it felt like a good omen when we arrived at the village—the British weather decided to play ball, and the skies were just as blue as the planters themselves!

We recommend our customers line the planters with materials like plastic sheeting, pond liners, or landscape fabric to add an extra layer of protection and help retain moisture.

Expert gardeners will use gravel, pebbles, or broken bricks at the bottom of the planter for drainage and give all outdoor furniture a coat of beeswax when needed to provide a natural, breathable, longevity and water-resistant barrier

This Bespoke drinks cabinet started as a Rustic Slate Effect Ceramic Tile! The hues of brown and grey slate inspired John to combine different media and engineer a unique design of a cabinet. This design highlights the shades of colour in wood, solid steel and steel features.

Glasses can hang stylishly from the built-in glass hangers, and there is room for two sets of six glasses, ideal storage for when you have guests.

There are several features that give precise attention to detail; the ceramic work surface is easy to wipe clean and is finished with a bevelled wood edging, the cabinet doors are aerated with the use of industrial porthole vents, the chequered plate door edging introduces a 'New York Loft Chic', so that all in all this statement piece exudes pure craftsmanship.

The interior shelf is made from sustainably sourced wood, as are the doors. The great thing about sustainable furniture is it doesn't need replacing a few years down the line. It is sturdy, solid and made to last.

Dog Friendly Gates and Garden Railings

If you are a dog owner, the safety of your beloved pet is of the utmost importance.

Therefore, when our customer requested a home consultation, we visited to measure up and chat through designs. Often our homes have driveways and open plan entrances to gardens, which of course, aren’t safe spaces for the family pooch to play and roam freely.

After a good look at the criteria that needed to be met, we etched out designs that met the 'Fleur-de-lis' design brief! Some customers love an ornate look and others a more modern design, anything is possible, and the best part of the service, as seen in these photos, is we can quote to supply only or install efficiently.

If you know John, you'll know 'precision ' is his middle name! So it won't surprise you that when a magnetic spirit level is required for accuracy, and planting of steel posts quickly, precision is achieved!

John will install the zinc primed and powder-coated posts to allow time for them to set and cure in the concrete, before tarmac is relaid if such a finish is required. He has a solution for all surfaces; patios, paving or tarmac can all be catered for, so if you have a vision, don't hesitate to ask how to go about it.

When the posts are installed, John always does a retrofit visit to see if any reasonable adjustments need to be made.

The key for this particular project was that when the gate opened, it needed to open inwards, and the slope of the path upward had to be catered for. With John's high level of engineering expertise, he will always seek out the best solution to discuss with you!

In this instance, we are thrilled to say that the family dog is loving the newfound freedom in his play space and was joined this Christmas by a light-up pooch for a friend!

John and Karen would like to wish all their customers a very Merry Christmas!

2025 has been an incredible year for us, we have been exceptionally busy. We have introduced so many stunning new products and undertaken numerous and varied commissions and bespoke projects this year too!

John’s design skills and ingenuity have meant we have produced some incredible pieces as well as a very diverse range of commissions. The projects have ranged from railings for the local council through to many ranges and planters in private homes, and some stunning ecclesiastical undertakings.

We also launched our new website in January, and our Etsy Shop goes from strength to strength. We are shipping our products all over the world, which is fantastic!

Our new blog i s very popular, and we continue to get more followers on our Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn platforms. Thank you to everyone who follows us!

Seafarers’ Prayer Space at St George's Church

One Saturday in Autumn, John and Karen visited the PCC on a mission to remove and repurpose old church pews. John was taken by the detail of the pew end 'cut outs' .....such intricate designs full of church history. The vision for St George's was to create a reflective, quiet space, for anyone to rest a while, pray, light a candle or simply feel peaceful in honour of all our hard-working seafarers.

The Seafarers’ Prayer Space began to evolve, rope knotting would feature, steelwork, an octagonal altar, a 'Noah's Ark 'themed base and a beautiful crucifix.

The Reverend Astrid is the Rector of the Benefice of Pill, Portbury and Easton-in-Gordano, which includes St George's Church in Easton-in-Gordano, in North Somerset.

Rev’d Astrid is from the Netherlands, and her family still lives there. She has been noted for her engagement with the local community, including winning an adult penalty shoot-out competition at a local event to the "pleasure and amazement of her family in Holland!". She has also been involved with local charities, such as the Morgan's Charity Parish Fund.

Rev'd Astrid has an amazing team of willing volunteers on The PCC, from retired headteachers, woodworkers and grenadier soldiers. Many of whom were involved in this project.

John and Karen were commissioned to design an octagonal altar, John proposed his optical illusion swirls of steel as a sturdy altar base, and worked tirelessly on repurposing the wood, retaining original history and witness marks, he cut, sanded and woodworked this bespoke piece of beauty with the 'piece de la resistance' being a resin mix that he poured into to colour in the cutouts to replicate the velvet cushion hues of ruby! Pure genius...Then for the crucifix and octagonal base.

On Sunday, 30 November, the first Sunday of Advent, John and Karen attended the 10.30 am blessing and met Fr. Jeremy Hellier, the Port Chaplain for the Mission to Seafarers at the Royal Portbury and Avonmouth Docks. He arrived perfectly dressed with his hi-vis jacket and walkie-talkie nearby! He serves as the chaplain for the two docks, with support from organisations like the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and has a wonderful connection with the parish of St George's.

Some of the eagle-eyed amongst you may recognise a retired woodwork teacher from St Katherines School in Pill, he was pleased to shake hands with John, his newly acquainted woodworker and fellow craftsman..... as the Icarus Steel Votive candle holder John created has become a collaborative piece, standing on the firm foundations of a beautifully crafted Noah's Ark, using reclaimed pew wood.

Your Own Piece of Tyntesfield

We are so fortunate to have the beautiful National Trust property on our doorstep, here in North Somerset.

Tyntesfield was not intended to be an extravagant statement of wealth, power or politics. Its purpose was simple: to serve as a family home.

Originally a smaller Georgian house, Tyntesfield was transformed into a Gothic Revival masterpiece. Its bespoke architecture reflects the devout Anglo-Catholic beliefs of the Gibbs family. Here, they invested their wealth derived from controlling the import of Peruvian ‘guano’ fertiliser.

The garden and estate balance faded beauty and function with an abundance of nature. Flower-filled terraces, an empty lake, extensive woodland, champion trees and a productive kitchen garden give many opportunities for exploration. And with each season, you can experience a new side to Tyntesfield.

After World War II, the redundant US Army hospital buildings on the Tyntesfield grounds were converted into accommodation for civilians who had been made homeless by the bombing in Bristol and elsewhere.

Over 100 families were relocated to this new "village", which consisted of the converted hospital buildings. One former resident's family member recalled the buildings were well-equipped with modern conveniences like hot water and central heating.

The housing was temporary, and the site was eventually abandoned in 1960, after which the land was returned to its former use.

During the war itself, the estate housed two US Army encampments, including a large general hospital, and provided shelter for evacuated schoolgirls from Clifton High School. The main house sustained some bomb damage during the Bristol Blitz that was not properly repaired for many years.

Tyntesfield means so much to so many people. With that in mind John has crafted a miniature house. set into reclaimed wood and completed with a tea light candle, when the candle is lit all the rooms in the house light up, how awe-inspiring!

Our stall is always outside Waitrose on The High Street, it is in close proximity to Tyntesfield and over October and November, we have met and chatted to several locals who recall the above, and as a devoted memory, have now purchased a replica steel house by candlelight

The All Year Round Hedgehog!

Hedgehogs are great allies for gardeners and are very beneficial to have in your garden for several key reasons

The most significant benefit is their role as natural pest controllers. Hedgehogs are nocturnal foragers, and their diet consists of many common garden nuisances, including:

• Slugs and Snails: They are particularly helpful in controlling the population of these pests that can severely damage young plants and vegetables.

• Caterpillars

• Beetles and Weevils

• Earwigs and Millipedes

By consuming these pests, hedgehogs help maintain plant health and reduce or eliminate the need for chemical pesticides and slug pellets, which is better for the overall ecosystem.

As they forage by snuffling and digging through the soil for their food, their activity also helps to aerate the soil. Their droppings also act as a natural fertiliser, enriching the soil and promoting a healthier environment for your plants.

Remembrance Sculpture and Poppies

The Grenadier Guards is one of the oldest and most iconic regiments in the British Army. Whether they are fighting on the front line or guarding a Royal Palace, members of the Regiment are renowned for their determination, loyalty and grit.

Grenadier soldiers have been in numerous wars throughout history, with the most famous example being the British Army's. The term "grenadier" initially referred to soldiers armed with grenades, but today it is used by specific regiments and elite units in various armies.

It is said that once a grenadier, always a grenadier and today we have had the privilege of working with a retired Grenadier and his loyal, doting wife, who were determined to gift their local church a sculpture called 'The Unknown Soldier'

They commissioned John to work in solid steel and replicate the soldier in a 6-foot-tall ensemble of steel. John knew that this statement piece would need an angular brace to support it from the rear and a solid circular flat base that could stand on a church floor, a patio or paving. His ingenious approach to such sculptures means that he has carefully crafted steel angular pegs (similar to those we use on camping trips, like tent pegs) and precision-welded four cleats to the base. Each cleat has a pre-drilled hole in it so that with steel pegs it can be staked into a grassy verge or with the correct fastenings it can be permanently bolted into a paved area.

We feel very privileged to have been commissioned by such a kind-hearted, loyal and now retired Grenadier soldier who, alongside his hard-working wife, sought out our craftsmanship to craft this fitting tribute of remembrance.... which you will find on display at St George's Church in Easton in Gordano, near Bristol.

In addition to crafting beautiful, handcrafted furniture, log holders, garden pieces, and gifts, Industrial Modern Furniture also undertakes individual commissions. This blog tells the inspiring story of one such piece, ultimately installed on the High Street in Portishead.

Kate Davies is an amazing local watercolour artist who, during lockdown and those daily walks, found herself drawn to our beautiful local bird life and even spotted a woodpecker!!

Inspired by nature, she drew and painted and had lots of family time too with her husband and two young boys. The drawing of a tree to capture her love of nature inspired Portishead Town Council to commission a beautiful creation for all to enjoy.

The piece was an artistic collaboration between John, Kate and the Town Council. The piece was positioned above the usual eyeline as a reminder to us all to look up and not down in life, as well as making it visible for those travelling around Portishead by bus or car..

A permanent steel tree, crafted by John using a solid steel rod for branches, he applied his hand-crafting wisdom and steel-bending technique to craft whimsical branches as Kate had envisioned them!! What a result!

The tree was to dress the wall outside Muse The Clothing Boutique on Portishead High Street. Amanda, the shop owner of The Muse, was consulted every step of the way. The black and gold finish was to reflect her independent store image and logo. There was a great deal of interest from bystanders whilst the installation was taking place!

John either chose to plasma or laser cut the birds, depending upon the intricacy. Each finished bird was then placed very carefully and welded onto the delicate branches.. A zinc anti-corrosion primer and applying a smoother enamel gave the finishing touch.

Fantastic Success at Artport 2025!

We were so thrilled to meet with so many people at this weekend’s Artport.

We were at the Beacon Hub, which is a super venue.

We were on the ground floor, alongside many other exhibitors and close to the lovely Café.

There was a great atmosphere and we were really busy on both days.

Many visitors found us for the first time and have gone away to measure up at home to see what size the furniture item needs to be.

Enjoy Your Garden This Autumn

Autumn is a great time to make changes to your garden so that you will enjoy it even more next year. It’s time to plant spring bulbs and many other plants, mulch your borders and prepare new ground for growing.

Things to do in the garden during autumn

Mulch your flower borders

Mulch is the name given to a thick, loose layer of material placed on top of bare soil in flower beds or containers. Adding this layer helps to suppress weeds, increase water retention and improve the quality of the soil. It can also neaten the appearance of beds and protect roots from winter frost.

Popular materials used for mulching are garden compost, wood chippings, manure and leaf mould.

Apply your mulch of choice in a layer 2-3 inches thick, taking care to leave space around the woody stems of plants.

Look after your soil

Leaving beds empty with exposed soil over winter isn't good for soil health. Mulch empty vegetable and flower beds, as above, to protect them.

Plant bulbs

Spring bulbs can be planted in pots or in your flower borders throughout autumn. Daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses are best planted before the end of September when the soil is still warm. October and November are good times to plant your tulips.

Bulbs of tulips, crocuses and daffodils can be planted in pots or your flower borders. If you have a large area of grass, try planting crocus bulbs in drifts for a vibrant colour show in early spring.

If you’re planting in pots, use a peat-free compost and really pack your bulbs in for a great display – you can even layer them up for a succession of colour.

Clear leaves

When the leaves start to fall and the season heads into mid to late autumn, it's a good idea to clear leaves from lawns to keep the grass healthy.

Use a rake or battery-powered leaf blower and keep the leaves to make leaf mould for feeding next year’s plants. Do this by piling leaves in wire cages and leaving them to break down.

The Portishead Community is delighted to welcome a new business to the High Street.

The Settle Inn is a Micro Pub, offering a range of real ales, as well as a wide selection of other drinks.

Industrial Modern Furniture was approached by Ed, the Owner of this exciting new venue, to discuss making a new bar and bespoke furniture.

Ed wanted a unique, industrial feel for this bar, and John was the right person to help!

For weeks, John created a fantastic range to meet the brief, including a bar, fixed bar tables, and stunning display shelving.

The overall result looks amazing with lots of other features, including rustic wooden flooring, blackboards and beer taps.

The bar is located at 46 High St, Portishead, Bristol BS20 6EL. The opening hours are noon until 10 pm on Friday and Saturday, and noon until 4 pm on Sundays.

Tremendous Success at The Portishead Summer Show

We always knew that the Portishead Summer Show was going to be special.

Both John and Karen were very much looking forward to this event as, primarily, they love being part of any community events in Portishead. Secondly, they always look forward to seeing customers, friends and family. To top it off for this year’s event, the weather was perfect with wall-to-wall glorious sunshine!

We went down to set up for the Show Field, other traders and exhibitors were fascinated by our beautiful items and even bought several pieces before we even got everything out on display!

Both days were a tremendous success and we were thrilled to win The Western Daily Press Perpetual Cup for BEST Trade 'Non horticultural' Entry....First Prize!

Our aim before attending was to promote the concept of shopping locally and supporting local businesses like ours. So, you can imagine our delight when we won this prestigious trophy!

We are so grateful to the organisers of the Portishead Summer Show, the army if volunteers who ensure everything runs smoothly, and a special thank you to Bob Cartwright for taking the “official” photos for us.

Stunning Contemporary Bespoke Handrail

We are increasingly being invited to homes where the front of house makeover includes paving, new steps and a great building design, to discover that a steel specialist is needed to complete the look and comply with safety requirements.

We are, of course, not only happy to oblige but also offer an on-site design and measure-up service.

As the customer here says, the tendency for anyone knocking at the door is to take a step back out of politeness, so therefore a handrail was a must-have piece of steel work!

After the customer consultation was completed at this Long Ashton home, we agreed that an Anthracite Grey finish would complement the doorway and garage.

Taking inspiration from the geometric design in the front door, a contemporary rectangular vibe was the winning design.

John is able to offer a retrofit for all made-to-measure items, including railings and will tack weld onsite to ensure made-to-measure precision! Once the customer is happy with the desired look, the railings get the zinc primed anti-corrosion treatment before a hybrid powder coat.

Challenging Location? No Problem for IMF!

When the location has a slope in one direction, and the bordering wall slopes the other way. How will your planters look level!!?

John's engineering mind and attention to detail mean every problem has a solution!

This is the planter spotted by a local customer at North Somerset Arts Week

However, to fill the space, 3 planters needed to be crafted with a super large 2 metre planter as the centre-piece.

This Planter has been perfectly crafted to sit indoors for houseplants or outside on gravel, paving or straight on the lawn. Its durability and strength is enhanced with the precision-welded steel rim and upper frame.

The traditional dimensions of the rectangle are Length 80cm x 30cm Width and the height is 41cm. This height is made up of 30 cm planter depth; and an additional 11cm in height of carefully crafted feet.

Each leg/foot was cut, crafted and welded in steel under the planter, in order to work with the ground slope.

John crafted adjustable legs in order to achieve the desired height and straight edge along the top of all planters, whilst accommodating the slope incline within the trough.

These planters are made from self-colored steel that oxidises over the first year of planting; then when you've achieved the patina you desire you can coat the planter using beeswax or specialist oil.

On-site installation meant we saw "sparks fly" with angle grinder work required. John specialises in meeting the customer's needs, so if the space for your planter requires such a service Contact Us.

Industrial Modern Furniture have designed, built and installed several bespoke bars and counters for customers.

These bars have ranged from a bar in a café, to a Shop Counter, through to a party bar in a private home, so, we have something for everyone!

Here is some more information that might tempt you to improve a retail or hospitality location, or maybe add a fantastic feature to your home or outdoor space.

Many of the Industrial-themed pieces of furniture, that are more and more popular these days, were originally inspired by the chic New York apartments that were rebuilt and modernised from industrial buildings, lofts and warehouses in the 20 ^th Century.

These newly created living spaces were often vast with exposed brick, high ceilings and features left over from their industrial heritage, therefore required a new approach to design and manufacturing of furniture to complement these stylish spaces.

This style inspired John to design and build a bar made from wood and corrugated steel.

We pride ourselves, that all our items are well packed. We will quote each item individually for each customer to include tracking and insurance.

Custom-Made Handrails for a Private Garden

Many of us will be aware of friends or family who have had to move home because of access issues in their garden or approach to the property. Moving can be very unsettling, costly and stressful for all those involved.

Going to the large DIY stores or local or even online Garden Centres to try and find a solution is often a waste of time and in most cases very expensive.

We were approached, by a lovely couple in Portishead to look at a garden that was a unique shape with several steep paths. Access and safe movement around their lovely garden was becoming difficult and potentially unsafe. The rails that they had previously looked at were very utilitarian and unattractive.

After contacting us, John went to look at the garden and went for a site visit and designed a great affordable solution.

The solution was to hand-build steel handrails. The steel was dipped in an anti-corrosion primer and powder-coated in a black finish.

As can be seen in the photos below, each section included a beautiful decorative scroll

This project resulted in the garden not only having functional and safe handrails, installed by John, but also having a stunning new, unique garden feature.

We were delighted with this finished project and our customers were thrilled to be able to use their garden again!

Inspired by the Historic Clevedon Pier

We are so fortunate to have this iconic pier so close to home here in Clevedon.

Clevedon Pier is a seaside pier in the town of Clevedon, Somerset, England on the east shore of the Severn Estuary. It was described by Sir John Betjeman, as "the most beautiful pier in England" and was designated a Grade I listed building in 2001.

The pier was built during the 1860s to attract tourists and provide a ferry port for rail passengers to South Wales. The pier is 312 m (1,024 ft) long and consists of eight spans supported by steel rails covered by wooden decking, with a pavilion on the pier head.

The pier opened in 1869 and served as an embarkation point for paddle steamer excursions for almost 100 years. Two of the spans collapsed during stress testing in 1970 and demolition was proposed, but local fund raising and heritage grants allowed the pier to be dismantled for restoration and reassembled. It reopened in 1989, and ten years later was awarded the Pier of the Year from the National Piers Society, and a Civic Trust Award. The pier now offers a landing stage for steamers and is a popular attraction for tourists and anglers.

John was inspired by the tremendous design and has used this inspiration to design a beautiful side table .

The venue was amazing and it was great to be able to display so many of our pieces.

We met so many new people as well as lots of friends, family and existing customers coming to see us.

On 8 May 2025, we mark the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day, with the peoples, families and communities of our great nation coming together to unite and celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of World War II in Europe that so many millions paid the ultimate sacrifice to achieve .

VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since.

We encourage everyone to take part and gather in the streets, gardens, town and city halls, clubs and pubs, and at home too, and be part of this anniversary providing a day of joy, reflection, and celebration, as part of the Commonwealth’s 2.4 billion people, reaffirming our commitment to world peace, ensuring future generations understand and cherish its value.

At 9am Town Criers will undertake the VE Day Proclamation as the VE Day 80 flags are raised, and at 12noon, Pipers will play a unique tune especially written for the occasion entitled ‘Celebratum’ from the top of the UK’s four highest Peaks and at 6.30pm, Cathedrals and Churches will ring out in united celebration throughout the nation, and at 9.30pm over one thousand beacons and hundreds of Lamp Lights of Peace will shine throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, with the flames from them both, representing the ‘light of peace’ that emerged from the dreadful darkness of war, along with the nation coming together in city and town squares to village greens, and all other manner of locations at this special and unique one moment in time, and sing the great British Hymn ‘I Vow To Thee My Country, standing side by side in gratitude, honouring the many sacrifices that secured our freedom.

From 3- 11 May, over 200 local artists will be opening up their homes and studios or gathering in shared venues to show you their latest work.

The Light & Glory of New Life in The Easter Season

Celebrating light at Easter, may see you having a tranquil moment of stillness by candle light, it can be a beautiful way to relax and be reflective. Others may go for a roaring fire!! Just as Midnight Mass is the main event for Christmas, the Easter Vigil is the main event for the Easter season. Easter Saturday is known as Holy Saturday which traditionally was a very quiet day, the liturgy unfolds with symbol after symbol of the significance of this night being unveiled before our very eyes, and it all starts with light.

Often Church services begin in the darkness outside with a great fire pit, the fire will be blessed, and from it the great Paschal Candle is lit. The fire symbols the light and glory of the Resurrection.

So whether you celebrate the Easter season by candle light or firelight, some of our beautiful handmade creations will be perfect.

Celebrating some of our Ecclesiastical Projects

As we approach this important time of year in the Christian calendar, we thought it was a great opportunity to share details about two wonderful art installations at St Mary’s Church in Portbury near Bristol.

The Platinum Jubilee Cross

John was approached by Julie Mainstone to help with a truly wonderful collaboration to create a contemporary representation of the joy of the resurrection.

Julie describes the journey of her creation

“It started with a quick sketch where I was trying to convey movement in the figure of Jesus dancing away from the cross. The design was a contemporary representation of the joy of the resurrection. So I wanted to use colour to add to the storytelling and most of the church has just clear glass.

As it was to be a Platinum Jubilee tribute from the community it was also important to me to involve the community in the process. So my colour design for the glass was divided into 12 squares and 12 members of the congregation under expert guidance from award winning fused glass artist Sarah Aumayer of Mydsomer Studio each created a segment using granulated glass 'Frit'.

Sarah fired the glass pieces in her kiln and they were taken along to be transformed into the final installation by the talented John Osborne of Industrial Modern Furniture and TV's 'Saved and Remade' fame. His skills with metal have framed the glass pieces and interpreted my sketch with metal lines and added a simple platinum crown of thorns. He created a bespoke plinth and the whole beautiful final cross was installed and unveiled to the public on 20th August and officially dedicated in a service on 28th August 2022

It is such a powerful visual image and means so much to me to see how the community really felt involved. I am truly humbled at how this wonderful piece of art has been created and by the combined talents of Sarah and John without whom my vision would not have been able to be brought to life.”

John worked with the stained glass tiles to create a steel frame and crucifix, with artistic licence he was able to craft a crown for 'The King of Kings' an abstract vision in steel rather than the actual crown of thorns and mount this bespoke piece on a steel plinth at St Mary's Church Portbury.

Congregational Prayer Candle Holder

This outstanding piece of art can also be found at St Mary’s.

It was created so that the curves of steel represent waves and water.

The prayer candles are nestled between the layers and the light is reflected accordingly.

St Mary’s is a wonderful place to visit and is Venue 12 as part of North Somerset Arts Week, so when you plan a trip to see us at Venue 10 Careys DIY Workshops and Yard in Portishead why not visit Portbury too.

Our Prestige Garden Sculpture Selection

Bubbles Garden Sculpture

This handcrafted solid steel garden art has been named "Bubbles" by John Osborne. And this innovation is made to order from steel that is left in it's original self-coloured state, it will oxidise to create a very in vogue orangey hue.

This steel sculpture stands 2metres tall and sits on the ground with a base circle that is a diameter of 600mm, the entire sculpture will be treated with Owatrol Oil to inhibit any further rust. The way Owatrol Oil works is that it penetrates through to the base metal to prevent further rust and protects the desired oxidised patina.

This handcrafted solid steel garden art has been named "Flaming Glory" by John Osborne. And this innovation is crafted in solid steel.

This steel sculpture stands 1850mm tall and 500mm wide and sits on the ground with a base rectangle of steel. It's hybrid finish means that it has been handcrafted before being primed in an anti-corrosion zinc dip. The beautiful gleam you gain from the white smooth powder coated finish is sublime! Look closely and you will see that although crafted from solid steel it has a gentle flame like quiver when gently twanged by the garden lover or visitor.....how enchanting! Whether you sense a flame or a spiritual link to this piece it's unique in it's design and would look stunning against a green landscape, on the patio or in your plant beds.

Flaming Glory

The Steel Frame has been welded together with precision and can be kept outside or used as an indoor bell.

It is a working bell which gives a light chime when struck or moved. Likened most recently to the sound of a Tibetan Singing Bowl!

The steel structure stands a total of 600mm high and is quite the statement piece, perfect for your garden sanctuary.

Tango Rails at Portishead Lake Grounds Play Park

When the Portishead Town Council observed the corrosion and damage of the Portishead Play Park at The Lake Grounds, they were keen to seek the most sustainable and affordable solution.

Recently Councillor Roger Whitfield spoke eloquently about our town's "beloved green spaces" and there is balance to be achieved, when considering, green spaces, maintenance programmes, funding and sustainability.

Industrial Modern Furniture were approached by Portishead Town Council to evaluate the situation and offer a solution.

During the initial site visit, John assessed that there was a mix of issues, and initially counted a total of 114 railing panels to be replaced!

Some railings were old and badly damaged, others would need John to apply his 'Research & Development' knowledge and make a clear plan of action for the Council.

This much-needed project had to be safe, viable and affordable. John has the expertise and experience to do this and his proposal was given the go-ahead.

Some railings needed to be replaced, some could be repurposed and others were still doing a perfectly good job in keeping children safe inside the play park, and playful dogs out! This explains why you see new panels in groupings of 2 or 3 consecutively replaced along the boundary railings while some perfectly good old railings remain!

Tango Railings were already in place and were also used for all the remedial work. Tango Railings have unique qualities to have the functionality to adjust them for uneven and sloping areas.

They tackle tricky hills by a system that connects each railing in a way that can be manipulated to run along a flat surface, or up a hill! So whatever the terrain, John can apply his precision to plan and carry out a perfect installation!

A Tango rail also has a bow top, or semi-circle hoop top railing design and guarantees safety – vital in this situation when young children are involved. – nowhere for little ones to trap their heads, necks or fingers. Ideal for this situation.

There is still work to be done, but phase 1: 'In need of immediate replacement' has been completed! Phase 2 will entail less urgent repairs, and various other phases will take place over time.

John can also install new, or replace existing railings in your own gardens, courtyards or grounds. These can be made to your exact specification. You can have functional railings such as those described above or individually crafted ornate ones- unique to you.

“Nowhere Fundraisers” for Cancer Research UK are turning NailSEA town into a Sea of Pink from 15 – 30 March. The whole community is joining in the fun with knitters busily clicking their needles to make covers for the street bollards. Sewing machines are whirring away, turning out metres and metres and metres of pink bunting to decorate the High Street and Crown Glass Shopping Centre. Shops and businesses are decorating their windows in a POP of PINK, not only the town centre shops but also those on the periphery.

Fresh from the Industrial Modern Furniture workshop, our limited edition 'Hot Pink' Garden Stakes will be on sale online and at Nailsea Farmers Market this Saturday 9am - 1pm.

Inspired by the Rose Garden at Tyntesfield

We are immensely proud of every single piece that we design and produce here at Industrial Modern furniture, but every now and then one particular piece grabs the hearts and minds of our customers.

The Rose Obelisk Garden Support is one of these!

John was inspired to design this beautiful piece after a visit to the stunning Rose Garden at the Tyntesfield a National Trust property not far from Bristol.

This can be a standalone feature, or a support for climbing plants in a bed or a large pot

We have garden obelisks that stand 1.5 and 2 metres tall. These make a striking feature even before all your summer Clematis and Sweet Peas cover it! These can be finished in either smooth black enamel or self-colored steel.

The National Trust were so impressed that as from last summer, they are selling these in their shops at Tyntesfield and Stourhead. The photo at the top of blog is a tripod of 2m height however the rose obelisk inspired by the Rose Garden at Tyntesfield is 1.5m tall

John's genius new build has got us WHEELY excited!!

You may have seen John's very efficient market pack-up on Facebook last weekend, which was all thanks to our new Art Trolley!

This was initially something John designed for himself to solve the problem of climbing 3 flights of stairs every month with a selection of heavy steel items ready for market. He measured the location - Somerset Hall’s lift and crafted his cart to fit perfectly alongside him!

The original trolley went down a treat and worked so well that they have become highly requested! So, whether you need to transport furniture, pottery or something else entirely, we will be happy to craft you a trolley that will fit into your space.

Going back a few months ago, some of the wonderful volunteers of Portishead in Bloom found some very old rail track. A few locals thought it was possibly very old and knowing of John’s love of metal and wood offered it to him.

After further research it was confirmed that this was genuine “Broad Gauge” track from an old GWR line!

Let the history story begin….

Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed his Great Western Railway to be the finest in the world and its trains originally ran on Brunel's broad-gauge tracks. Brunel’s idea was that the broad-gauge track (7 ft ¹ ⁄ ₄ in [2,140 mm]) would carry larger carriages and indeed it did. Today our trains run along standard gauge rail track (4ft 8in) which is traditionally shaped in the style of a capital letter ‘I’

The track is believed to be Portishead Track and some of it has been repurposed for you to keep a ‘Piece of Portishead History’ in your home. Gifted to Industrial Modern Furniture by Portishead in Bloom, John and Karen have ensured that various museums have exhibits of this track as it is believed to be Brunel’s Broad-Gauge Track. We have learnt that hundreds of men were involved with the removal of Brunel’s Broad-Gauge track in 1880 when the Portishead branch line was converted to Standard Gauge Track. These men worked the line to convert the track within 3 days, from between Sat 24th and Tues 27th January 1880 This is well documented within train enthusiast groups, on Wikipedia and at Transport Museums. We were helped locally with information from Portishead’s Paul Gregory of The WC&P Railway Group (historical light railway)

Wikipedia quotes that The Portishead Railway is a branch line railway running from Portishead in North Somerset to the main line immediately west of Bristol , England. It was constructed by the Bristol & Portishead Pier and Railway Company, but it was always operated by its main line neighbour, and was more usually thought of as the Portishead branch or the Portishead railway.

It opened as a broad gauge (7 ft ¹ ⁄ ₄ in [2,140 mm]) line to connect new docks at Portbury, at the west side of the mouth of the River Avon , with the railway network. The line opened to Portishead in 1867, and to the docks in 1879.

Repurposing this historic track has been an absolute privilege for John and these items are now available to buy.
